Astaxanthin enhances fat oxidation during cycling in active females 🔥
A potent carotenoid pigment.
Astaxanthin Supplementation Lowers Respiratory Exchange Ratio During Submaximal Cycling in Females: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Crossover Trial
Study Details
This new study recruited 20 active females to complete 2 x 2-week supplementation periods of either…
1️⃣ Astaxanthin (12 mg/day)
2️⃣ Placebo
…separated by a 2-week washout period.
At the end of each supplementation period, participants completed submaximal ramped cycling exercise with gas exchange analysis to establish metabolic effects 🚴♀️
Key Findings
📉 Compared to placebo, astaxanthin led to significantly lower respiratory exchange ration (RER) during cycling
👉 Indicating a shift toward a greater reliance on lipid-dominant substrate at specific submaximal intensities
There were no significant differences in heart rate, blood lactate, or rate of perceived exertion ❌
Conclusion
Astaxanthin is a carotenoid with antioxidative properties, which has repeatedly been shown to influence exercise metabolism and in some cases improve endurance performance 🧐
