Blackcurrant extract enhances high-intensity running performance 📈
Results potentially dependant on muscle fibre type.
Effects of Blackcurrant Extract During High-Intensity Intermittent Running: An Exploratory Study of Possible Muscle Fibre-Type Dependence
Study Details
This new study recruited 16 active males to complete high-intensity intermittent treadmill running performance to exhaustion 🏃♂️
The running test was completed twice after…
💊 7-days blackcurrant extract (210 mg anthocyanins per day)
…and twice after 7-days placebo supplementation.
Participants also completed muscular testing to predict muscle fibre typology 🧬
Key Findings
Participants were categorised into…
1️⃣ predominantly muscle fibre type I (“slow-twitch”)
2️⃣ predominantly type II typology (“fast twitch”)
Only the “slow-twitch” individuals improved…
📈 total running distance (+17 ± 12%)
⚡️ high-intensity running distance (15 ± 11%)
At exhaustion, there were no differences between muscle typology groups for heart rate and lactate 🔍
Conclusion
Anthocyanin-rich blackcurrant extract can enhance high-intensity running performance ✅
But ergogenic effects may be muscle fibre type dependant with effects most prominent for those with type I “slow-twitch” muscle dominance 🧬
