Caffeine Tolerance in Endurance Sports: Does Habitual Intake Reduce the Effectiveness of Acute Supplementation?

This narrative review examined whether habitual caffeine consumption reduces the acute ergogenic effect of caffeine in endurance exercise, with a particular focus on habituation and tolerance 🔍

☕ Habitual coffee consumption complicates the picture because caffeine exposure can vary substantially between serving sizes and preparation methods
🚫 Current evidence does not support routinely withdrawing from caffeine before competition for all habitual users
🔄 Some evidence suggests a period of abstinence may restore part of the response in certain individuals, but this is not established strongly enough to recommend universally
⬆️ Increasing the acute caffeine dose may partly restore performance benefits in some habituated athletes, but routine dose escalation is not supported
Conclusion
The key takeaway here is that habitual users generally remain responsive, but the size and consistency of their response may be reduced after sustained daily exposure ☝️
Caffeine strategies should therefore be individualised and tested in training rather than assuming habitual use either completely removes or has no effect on its ergogenic benefit ✅
