Collagen supplementation increase type I collagen content in muscle 💪
Evidence to support performance and rehab outcomes?
Specific collagen peptides supplementation increases collagen type I content in skeletal muscle after 12 weeks of high-load resistance training: a randomized controlled trial
Study Details
This new study recruited 29 healthy males who completed 12-weeks of resistance training alongside daily supplementation with either…
1️⃣ 15g collagen peptides
2️⃣ Placebo
Muscle biopsies were collected pre- and post-intervention to assess changes in intramuscular adaptations 💉
Key Findings
👉 Both groups significantly increased collagen types III and IV content of muscles
📈 However, the collagen group significantly increased type I collagen content of muscle (29.8%) compared to placebo (9.9%)
Type I collagen forms part of the extracellular matrix which provide structural support, transmit contractile force to tendons, and maintain muscle elasticity ⚡️
Conclusion
These results indicate that collagen supplementation may enhance resistance-trained adaptations to training ✅
Although performance outcomes were not assessed in this study ☝️
