The Effects of Ingesting a Single Bolus of Hydrolyzed Collagen versus Free Amino Acids on Muscle Connective Protein Synthesis Rates
Study Details
This new study recruited 45 young adults to complete unilateral resistance-exercise followed by either…
1️⃣ 30g hydrolysed collagen
2️⃣ 30g free amino acids
3️⃣ Placebo
…to establish the effects of collagen on muscle protein synthesis and connective tissue synthesis rates 📈
The free amino acids were matched to reflect the amino acid composition of the collagen 🔬
Here is what they found ⬇️
Key Findings
Both collagen and amino acid conditions significantly elevated circulating amino acid levels 🩸
(particularly glycine)
However, neither significantly increased myofibrillar protein synthesis rates in the rested or exercised state ❌
Plus, both failed to significantly elevate connective protein synthesis rates in both rested and exercised states 🚨
Conclusion
Whilst ingestion of hydrolysed collagen (and similarly composed amino acids) raise circulating blood amino acid concentrations 📈
This is not associated acutely with any mechanistic changes in muscle or connective tissue protein synthesis‼️
Is collagen worth the investment, or would a basic whey protein be better? 🧐
