Key Findings
🔥 Dehydration reduced average oxidation of the ingested glucose by ~16%
📉 Peak exogenous glucose oxidation was also approximately 12% lower during the dehydrated trial
⚡ Average exogenous glucose oxidation was 0.51 g/min when dehydrated, compared with 0.61 g/min when hydration was maintained
🏁 Peak exogenous glucose oxidation reached 0.70 g/min when dehydrated, compared with 0.79 g/min when hydrated
⏱️ The largest difference occurred after only 60 minutes, when body-mass loss was approximately 1%
🔄 The proportion of ingested glucose that was oxidised was approximately 51% with dehydration and 61% with maintained hydration
🩸 Dehydration also reduced plasma volume and increased plasma osmolality, confirming greater physiological strain
Conclusion
This reduced use of ingested glucose may have resulted from slower glucose delivery from the gut and/or changes in muscle glucose metabolism 🧐
Hydration and carb strategies should be planned together, as becoming dehydrated may reduce how effectively athletes use the carbs they consume during prolonged exercise 🎯
