Disordered eating in athletes increases injury risk π¨
A warning for athletes and practitioners.
A longitudinal investigation of performance and injury outcomes associated with disordered eating in elite athletes
Study Details
This new longitudinal study investigated self-reportedβ¦
π Performance
ποΈ Days missed from training/competition due to injury
β¦in relation to presence and severity of disordered eating π
178 elite athletes from πΊπΈ and π¦πΊ completed the online surveys across a 12-month period.
Here is what they found β¬οΈ
Key Findings
π Greater baseline disordered eating significantly predicted a greater increase in days missed due to injury at 6-month
πͺ Greater disordered eating was significantly associated with poorer self-reported performance across all timepoints
Interestingly, baseline disordered eating did not predict a significant change in performance over time (controlling for gender) β
Conclusion
Disordered eating (symptoms) should be monitored in athletic populations as it can carry significant associated risks for injury β οΈ
