Going gluten-free will not improve your performance ❌
No advantage to gluten-free (if not celiac).
A gluten-free diet does not alter performance outcomes in nonceliac athletes undergoing sprint interval training: a pilot trial
Study Details
Many athletes consider gluten-free diets for perceived benefits for performance, health and body composition, despite being non-celiac 🧐
This new study examined the effects of either a 6-week…
🌾 Gluten-free diet
🍽️ Mixed diet
…on metabolic and performance outcomes in male endurance athletes 🔍
Here is what they found ⬇️
Key Findings
The gluten-free diet did lead to significant reductions in weight (-2.7 kg) and BMI (-0.75) vs the mixed diet 📉
Plus there was a significant difference in V̇O2peak between groups with the gluten-free group proving to a greater degree 🫁
(+9.10 vs +3.20 ml/kg/min)
However, time-trial distance was not different between groups ⏱️
There were also minimal differences in metabolic parameters including…
❌ Fat oxidation
❌ FatMax
❌ Gastrointestinal quality of life
Conclusion
A gluten-free diet may induce changes in body composition and some aerobic parameters 🤔
But this does not translate into performance outcomes or improved gastrointestinal health ❌
