Effect of Green Tea Extract Supplementation on Substrate Utilization: A GRADE-Assessed Systematic Review and Dose-Response Meta Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials
Study Details
This new meta-analysis compiled data from 9 studies to establish the effects of green tea supplementation on substrate utilisation π
Here are the key findings β¬οΈ
Key Findings
π Green tea extract doses were most commonly ~400 mg/day for ~4 weeks
Results showed that green tea extract significantly enhances fat oxidation bothβ¦
π During exercise (+ 0.2 g/min)
πΆ After exercise (+0.4 g/min)
It also significantly reduced carbohydrate oxidation after exercise (- 0.16 g/min) π
β But did not affect carbohydrate oxidation during exercise
π Higher doses of green tea tended to favour greater enhancements in fat oxidation post-exercise
Conclusion
Green tea extract can significantly enhanced fat metabolism during exercise with limited effects on carbohydrate metabolism β
This may not result in significant improvements in body composition or performance π€·ββοΈ
But could be an interesting adjunct strategy to targeting this pathway π―
