HMB enhances aerobic capacity in trained males 🫁
Far from the original bodybuilding supplement.
HMB supplementation combined with high-intensity functional exercise supports aerobic capacity but not strength in trained and untrained males: a randomized controlled trial
Study Details
This new study recruited 53 trained males (TR) + 37 untrained males (UTR) to complete 2 x 3-week periods of either…
1️⃣ Supplementation (90 mg/kgFFM/day of HMB or placebo) with usual training (TR) or lifestyle (UTR)
2️⃣ HMB or placebo (as above) combined with additional high-intensity functional training (HIFT) twice weekly
Strength and aerobic performance were assessed pre- and post-intervention 🔍
Key Findings
Compared to placebo, HMB supplementation led to significantly increased markers of aerobic performance including…
✅ VO2max
✅ Time to anaerobic threshold
✅ VO2 at anaerobic threshold (VO2AT)
✅ Power output at AT
✅ Heart rate at AT
✅ Power output at respiratory compensation point (PowerRCP)
Simultaneously, UTR males showed significantly improved PowerRCP and Time at RCP with HMB vs placebo 📈
Assessments of strength including maximal voluntary isometric contractions did not differ between HMB and placebo ❌
Conclusion
HMB supplementation may optimise aerobic fitness and capacity gains when taken alongside high-intensity training 🫁
When taken alongside other research, HMB appears to be a much better endurance-related supplement compared to the original use for body composition and strength 🤔
