Effects of Kiwifruit Consumption on Blood Pressure in Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Study Details
This new meta-analysis pooled 6 RCTs (384 participants) examining the effects of kiwifruit consumption on blood pressure in adults 🔍
Here are the key findings ⬇️
Key Findings
🥝 Kiwifruit significantly reduced systolic blood pressure by 5.73 mmHg compared with control
🫀 Diastolic blood pressure fell by 4.08 mmHg
📈 Effects appeared greater in participants who started with elevated blood pressure
🥝 Consuming 3 kiwifruits/day reduced systolic blood pressure by ~9.1 mmHg
↔️ Two kiwifruits/day did not significantly reduce systolic blood pressure
💓 For diastolic pressure, 3 kiwifruits/day reduced BP by ~5.7 mmHg, while 2/day produced a smaller ~2.3 mmHg reduction
⚖️ Blood-pressure reductions were greater in participants with a normal BMI than in those classified as overweight
👨 Larger reductions were observed in male-only studies, although differences versus mixed-sex studies were not statistically conclusive
⏱️ Trials lasting ≤8 weeks showed significant reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure
🥗 Potential mechanisms include kiwifruit’s potassium, vitamin C, fibre, antioxidants and possible effects on ACE activity and vascular function
✅ Five of the six included RCTs were classified as having overall low risk of bias
Conclusion
Kiwifruit may therefore provide a useful dietary strategy for blood-pressure management, with the strongest signal seen around 3 fruits/day and in people with elevated baseline BP 🥝💪
