I've gone through the data. The vo2max change does look impressive but the ankle strength is very questionable. The difference between intervention and control is not much and I'm inherently dubious that leucine can magically strengthen ankles but not knees

Agreed, to me too it seems like a bit of an erroneous finding. Wouldn’t be surprised if it does support strength gains over the long term, but why not just use a protein powder for that long-term.
