Menstrual Cycle Phase Does Not Affect Carbohydrate Supplementation Ergogenic Effect After Heavy Intensity Cycling
Study Details
This new study recruited trained females to complete 90-min cycling exercise 🚴♀️
…twice in the mid-follicular and twice in the mid-luteal menstrual cycle phase🩸
…whilst drinking either carbohydrates or a placebo beverage🥤
4 km time trials (TT) were performed after each session ⏱️
Key Findings
TT performance was significantly better after consuming carbs in both phases vs placebo ⏱️
No differences across phases were observed ❎
There were also no differences observed between phases for performance fatigability 📉
Conclusion
Menstrual cycle phase does not appear to affect the performance enhancing effects of carbohydrate supplementation during exercise ✅
