Study Details
This new study assessed 9 male football players from Tottenham Hotspur Football Club over a 15-day in-season period
This included both a…
1️⃣ One-game week (1GW)
and
2️⃣ Two-game week (2GW)
Measurements included…
🔥 Energy expenditure
🍽️ Energy intake
⚽️ External physical load
Here is what they found ⬇️
Key Findings
1GW Data 1️⃣
⏰ Training + match duration = 335 min
⏱️ Avg. speed = 63 m/min
📍Total distance = 25552 m
👟 High speed running = 1744 m
📏 Sprint distance = 372 m
🔥 Energy expenditure = 3551 kcal/d
2GW Data 2️⃣
⏰ Training + match duration = 307 min
⏱️ Avg. speed = 73 m/min
📍Total distance = 26360 m
👟 High speed running = 1705 m
📏 Sprint distance = 324 m
🔥 Energy expenditure = 3467 kcal/d
Training + match duration was significantly higher in 1GW 📈
Average speed was higher in 2GW ⏱️
No other differences were observed between weeks ❌
Self-reported energy intake (2975 kcal/d) underestimated DLW energy intake estimates (3663 kcal/d) by 18% across both weeks 🤳
Conclusion
Energy expenditure does not appear to significantly differ between one- and two-game weeks in the Premier League 🗓️
Primarily due to similar external loads (e.g. game volume ⬇️ = training volume ⬆️)
