A 4-week caloric restriction with high volume resistance-training and high-protein diet does not increase fat-free mass sparing but increases strength
Study Details
This new 4-week study compared high- versus low-volume resistance training during a ~40% calorie deficit with 2.3 g/kg/day protein in 16 resistance-trained adults ๐
Participants trained 5 days/week and completed either 30 or 12 sets per major muscle group per week ๐๏ธ
Key Findings
โ๏ธ Body mass fell by ~4.2 kg across the intervention
๐ฅ Fat mass decreased by ~3.7 kg, accounting for most of the weight lost
๐ช Fat-free mass was maintained in both groups despite the aggressive calorie deficit
โ๏ธ Performing 30 sets/muscle/week did not preserve more fat-free mass than 12 sets/muscle/week
๐ฅฉ A high protein intake of 2.3 g/kg/day combined with resistance training therefore appeared sufficient to maintain FFM over the 4 weeks in this sample
๐ Higher-volume training did, however, produce greater improvements in strength
๐๏ธ Chest press 5RM increased ~18% with high volume versus ~7% with low volume
๐ฆต Right-leg press increased ~27% versus ~10%, while left-leg press increased ~25% versus ~14%
๐ช Machine-row strength improved in both groups, without a clear between-group difference
๐ง The authors suggest greater practice and neuromuscular exposure to the exercises may partly explain the extra strength gains rather than greater muscle growth
๐ฅ Resting energy expenditure fell by ~151 kcal/day, or ~8%, despite preservation of fat-free mass
๐ Nitrogen balance remained negative throughout the intervention and did not differ between training-volume groups
Conclusion
For maintaining muscle during short-term aggressive weight loss, ~12 sets/muscle/week may be enough when protein intake is high โ
However, higher volumes may still be useful when increasing or preserving strength is an important goal during a cut ๐
