Post-Exercise Recovery Methods
Study Details
This new review and meta-analysis included 61 studies and 1,194 participants, comparing common post-exercise recovery methods across performance, biochemical and perceptual outcomes 🔍
Interventions included cold therapy, contrast therapy, heat, compression garments, blood-flow restriction, massage, active recovery and nutrition 🧊
Here are the key findings ⬇️
Key Findings
📈 Across all modalities, performance generally returned to baseline within ~72–120 h
😌 Perceptual outcomes such as soreness and perceived recovery also generally returned to baseline within ~72–120 h
🩸 Biochemical markers recovered more slowly and had not clearly returned to baseline by 120 h
↔️ Crucially, no recovery modality consistently outperformed doing nothing for performance, perceptual or biochemical recovery
❄️ Cold-water immersion was the most frequently studied intervention, but its effects were inconsistent across studies and outcomes
🩳 Compression, massage, BFR, heat, contrast therapy and active recovery similarly showed occasional benefits in individual studies without a consistent overall advantage
🍽️ 11 studies investigated nutrition, but substantial differences between interventions meant these could not be included in the meta-analysis
🥤 Carbohydrate/protein manipulation generally did not clearly accelerate measured recovery, although carbohydrate remains important for glycogen restoration and protein for muscle repair
🧃 Beetroot juice reduced soreness in one study, while grape-seed extract reduced CK; ketone monoesters showed no clear benefit
⚠️ At least half of crossover studies and more than half of independent-group studies had some concerns or high overall risk of bias
🧩 Individual studies sometimes showed meaningful effects, but pooled evidence suggests these benefits are not sufficiently consistent to identify a universally superior recovery method
Conclusion
For athletes, recovery tools can still be selected around preference, practicality, cost and context, but the strongest overall message is that adequate time between demanding sessions appears to matter more than any specific recovery modality ✅
