Behavioral and Dietary Determinants of Body Shape Assessed by ABSI in a Mediterranean Clinical Sample
Study Details
This new study investigated associations between dietary / behavioural habits and ABSI a validated measure to assess body composition independently of BMI and height 🧠🩻
The population studied was a cohort of 1640 adults attending a Mediterranean diet-based nutrition clinic 🔍
Key Findings
The following habits were associated with poorer body composition…
🌖 Nighttime eating
🍫 Snacking between meals
🍬 Preference for sweet vs salty foods
Whereas, the only identified factor associated with improved body composition was…
⚽️ Playing a sport
Conclusion
Addressing nighttime eating, snacking and sweet food intake may help support improved body composition ✅
In addition to promoting physical activity 🫀
This study was not in a clinical setting, and therefore these findings are much more relevant to non-athletic populations vs athletes ‼️

Strong digest on ABSI's applicability here. The nighttime eating association is interesting cause it's not just about total calories but circadian misalignment affecting metabolic efficiency. I'd be curious if they controlled for total energy intake becuase sweet preference might just be a proxy for overconsumption rather than composition itself. The sport finding makes sense but kinda broad - resistance training vs cardio would probly show different patterns on visceral adiposity.
